This Mother's Day, Be a Witch

This Mother’s Day, I invite you to ponder the magic of the upcoming Full Moon in Scorpio. It will occur at 12:14 am on Monday, May 16th, 2022.

When you hear the word “witch,” what do you think of? If images of crooked-nosed, warty evil old women come to mind, that is no coincidence. The image of the evil witch was created hundreds of years ago as an attempt to control the wildness of women’s mysteries.

The astrological sign of Scorpio is an example of this. A feminine, fixed water sign, Scorpio is painted as wicked, secretive, and manipulative. This creates fear, and fear makes us easier to control. As a culture, we have turned on our backs on the divinity of the good witch in her fully-expressed glory, misinterpreting her magic, deeming her evil.

Here in the midst of Spring, the Scorpio Full Moon is an opportunity to remember that this, too, shall pass. Seasons change. All the budding life will, someday, die. It sounds negative, but really it is what makes all of life meaningful. If life never ended, we wouldn’t appreciate its gifts.

The Taurus Bull, the Maiden, would be content to lie in a field of blossoming flowers for all eternity. We are encouraged to embrace the world of the senses in Taurus season, to luxuriate in the beauty and sensuality of the world. But in the middle of this lazy, lovely time is a sparkling Scorpio Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse, reminding the Maiden that life isn’t always so easy.

Between the Maiden and the Crone is the Mother, whom we celebrate today. Her womb is miraculous. Her blood is magical. Her strength, protection and devotion is limitless. Whether we are male or female, whether we physically carry a child or not, we all hold the archetype of the Mother within us.

If you happen to watch a full moon eclipse, you get to witness the magic of the Moon appearing as though it moves through all of its phases of an entire 29 day cycle in mere moments. Eclipses, therefore, herald a phase in which timelines can collapse, when everything can change in an instant. This is the dynamic we are working with, in the week leading up to the Full Moon.

Be prepared for intensity, to ride the waves of emotion into the depths of the subconscious, to embrace the full range of emotion in all its power. Women are awakening now, healing their witch wounds and owning their fullness. To commemorate this Full Moon, let the wild woman within shine. Embody the triple goddess of Maiden, Mother & Crone and know that to do so helps heal hundreds of years of denial of her divinity. We all have that power within us.
