When we think of Cancer Sun Season, Cardinal Water sign, sensitive and nurturing, the initiation of summer, we can almost feel the chill of cool water on an early hot summer day. Refreshing, restoring, rejuvenating. But what if I was to tell you that there’s a certain HEAT to Cancer this season?
As we initiate summer with the ingress of the Sun into Cancer, palpable excitation bursts through the cosmos. This excitation has a freshness about it, a newness, a chill of exhilaration. We have so many placements in the first two degrees of their sign, it’s like a class of giddy children lining up for assembly and sort of tumbling forward with the momentum of anticipation. Excited anticipation. Emotional exhilaration. An abundance of passion and reaction.
Passion Versus Reaction-- the question of the season. Jupiter sits in those early degrees of Cancer, welcoming the Sun just as Mercury welcomed Jupiter’s entrance into Cancer just a week prior. And as Mercury said “buck up!” to Jupiter’s new emotional landscape, so does Jupiter to our Sun. These two solar system giants are sure to channel a potential flood of emotional insight this month, Jupiter expanding all that the Sun is illuminating. But what are we going to do with these heightened emotions? Passionate expression would be the higher ground here; channel that emotional query into some sort of meaningful, productive project. It needn’t be a physical project, perhaps this is a project of the mind. Emotional productivity? Harnessing the sheer depth of emotions here isn’t quite enough, we want to be fully in charge, holding firm to the reigns. If things start to feel out of control, too big to contain, too powerful to withstand, we start to loom in a space of pure reaction. And these reactions can and will be larger than life. Even if this isn’t part of your Cancer Season narrative, you’re sure to observe it in life at some point, up close or from afar. That’s what the abundance of Cancer energy promises this year: a presence that is larger than life.
The key to success with managing any emotional runaway trains this season lies in Mars. Mars will be moving direct through the sign Virgo for the entire Cancer Sun Season, giving us an opportunity to stand in our power and be constructively critical. Mars represents the developmental possibility of courage, and courage is exactly what it’s going to take to face our emotional truths this season, especially as sensitive parts of ourselves and our stories are illuminated and magnified.
The New Moon in Cancer falls early in the season, on June 25th. We’ve had a taste of what Cancer Sun season is highlighting for us at this point, and therein lies an invitation to start fresh. Have you been falling into old patterns of fearful withdrawal? Hiding behind caregiving or prioritizing others? Let go of those old behaviors and make room for what sounds like a simple shift but is actually a profound achievement: turn your healing power inward. Courageously. There might be a significant level of self-talk here to keep yourself on the path. It’s important to remember with all that potential support from your logical internal dialogue, we still need to FEEL our emotions, not just intellectualize them.
At the midway point of Cancer Sun Season, we are going to experience a pivotal moment regarding our authentic individuation: Uranus ingressing into Gemini. This slower moving outer planet hasn’t seen the sign of Gemini since the 1940s; this energy will be brand new to a stark majority of people on Earth at this moment. And just as we had to be weary of overintellectualizing our emotions for the first half of Cancer Sun Season, now we must be mindful of emotionalizing our unique perceptions. Questioning authority, questioning the status quo, questioning reasoning, all of these behaviors are par for the course under a Uranus in Gemini transit, but with so much emotional boldness behind the frequencies as hand, distinguishing between emotional truths and reality becomes imperative. Feelings are never wrong, but feelings also aren’t facts. Learning to distinguish between our reactions to NOW and our reactions stemming from alternate experiences ensures our investigations and inquiry are seen as ingenious and revolutionary rather than rebellious or even criminal. Enthusiasm must undergo frequent reality checks if we want to stay effective and efficient. This isn’t meant to be at all discouraging, but instead outlining the potential pitfalls of this immense energetic opportunity; we are here to affect change and the energies of the cosmos are ready. The time is now, so let’s make the most of it!
