It’s Time For Hygge

The word Hygge is pronounced “hoo-gah.

“Hygge has been called everything from the “art of creating intimacy, ‘coziness of the soul,’ and ‘the absence of annoyance,’ to ‘taking pleasure from the presence of soothing things,’ ‘cozy togetherness,’ and my personal favorite, ‘cocoa by candlelight.'”

Meik Wiking

Hygge is the Danish way to to live a life through acts of self care. It strives to create a cozy atmosphere, a warm cozy feeling. Just imagine being wrapped up in cozy warmth through winter. These frigid days, all we want to do is stay cozy.

And, you can, because you can create the kind of warm ambiance you want to be around. Sometimes it's just a matter of lighting a candle with an scent that relaxes the senses. Or it can be created by something as simple as a warm bath too. It's the little things in the details that matter because it's for you, your soul.

For me, creating Hygge or bringing in the feeling of warmth and coziness begins with the energy I want to create around me. What I really love to do is create a Hygge space. A place where I can come and be reminded of simple things that bring me joy.

Hygge is a way for us keep our joys close. It's finding the joy in the little things.

Another way to create Hygge is to surround yourself with good friends. Not just through gatherings but also sharing a nature walk or sharing a meal. Hygge is something you can create year round. Here, at the People's Congregation of Shakers and Movers, we create a sense of Hygge through Soul Saturdays! Think of how wonderful it feels to come together to soothe our souls with good company and music in the sanctuary every weekend.

This holiday season, create your self care ritual or Hygge space that comforts YOU. Surround yourself with those that lift you up. Nourish your body with warming foods and drinks. Bring in the warming scents of ginger, cinnamon and citrus. Diffuse any scents that make you happy and calm. Wear your coziest socks, your favorite hat and sweaters. This is a heart centered practice. These are just a few ideas I hope can bring you a loving embrace of coziness to nourish your soul.

Try it, let me know what you think.

Let's get cozy tomorrow through yoga movement and let the warmth surround you at the chapel.
