Dark Moon Days

While the Vernal Equinox and the turn of the celestial New Year was technically last weekend, this week we head towards the first lunation of the astrological year: the Aries New Moon.

One of the most significant teachings of astrology is, in my opinion, its cyclical nature. Each heavenly body, after all, orbits around a point. Each year we of course witness the movement of the Sun through the sky - this, as Copernicus so rebelliously discovered, was actually the movement of our Earth relative to the Sun. Either way, its movement is cyclical, as is our year.

The cycle of the year is a macrocosm to the cycles of the Moon - the waxing and waning of the Moon is much like the swelling and culling of the Earth that accompanies the seasons. As we come to the close of this most recent 28-day cycle, our feelings are similar to what we experience as we approach the first day of Spring.

From February 20th through March 20th the Sun is in the sign of Pisces. Pisces Season is a time of letting go, of surrender, of reflection and turning within. This is much like the time before any New Moon - when energy may feel low, emotions may feel deep, and we all may feel like surrender is our only option.

So as we head towards this particular New Moon, we’ll be feeling that descent into darkness quite profoundly. The cycle of the Zodiac means that, just as the Sun recently moved through the sign of Pisces for a month, so the Moon will do the same for approximately two-and-a-half days. These are Dark Moon days, when the sliver of the moon dissipates and we feel the full weight of gravity. This is the ideal time to slow down, turn within, rest, and release.

Come Thursday, there will be a shift in the air. As the Moon aligns with the Sun in the sign of Aries, it will be as if our emotions finally align with our mind. We turn our attention to new beginnings, to the quickening pulse of Spring and to the speeding up of life. Aries is a Cardinal Fire sign, and both the mode and the element are ones of forward momentum. Depending on what house Aries rules in your chart, this is where your action and energy will be focused for this next lunar cycle.
